Beyond Tolerance — construct development, religious cognition styles, identity-protective processes, pluralistic recognition in plural societies.
Why psychology — and why now.
Psychology was the original plan. At the end of secondary school, it was the intended direction — the field that seemed to hold the most fundamental questions about human behaviour. The discovery of partial colour-blindness changed that. In Indonesia, colour vision deficiency closes the door not only to medical and design programmes but to psychology as well. Economics was what remained after those doors closed.
That 'detour' lasted twenty-two years — and produced a career in insurance risk, a peer-reviewed publication, a commendable GM role, and an unconventional Sharia unit & spinoff project leadership. The UNICAF scholarship to LJMU in 2024 was the first moment the original door reopened. The path back was longer than anticipated. The questions that drove the original interest had only deepened in the interval.
Insurance's core product is peace of mind — which means its real substrate is psychology. Both fields ask the same underlying question: how do human beings manage uncertainty, assign value, and calibrate trust? Two decades of building insurance systems turned out to be two decades of applied observation in exactly that domain.
The research direction emerged from the same interval. Twenty-two years as a Buddhist-identified professional inside Indonesian corporate institutions — Catholic-schooled, working in environments where Dharmic minority identity is routinely misclassified — generated specific questions about recognition, legitimacy, and how people see what is different from them. Those questions became Beyond Tolerance.
Languages & Field Access
A Chinese Indonesian who spent two decades working professionally in global companies: Indonesian is the native language; English is the daily working language of education and career — examinations, management, technical writing, cross-border client work. Basic conversational Mandarin is a household inheritance. A stint in Malaysia added functional Malay. The combination gives direct, unmediated access to the primary fieldwork population — Indonesian religious minorities — without translation dependency, and situates the researcher as an insider to the condition being studied.

Clear-sighted Indonesian Insurance Leader Drives Growth
Fellow CIP Profile Feature · ANZIIF Journal, 19 Nov 2024
Profile article examining the career philosophy and professional approach of an ANZIIF Fellow CIP who describes himself as a "Swiss army knife" — applying skills across underwriting, product development, analytics, and strategy. Discusses the application of the uberrima fidei principle, the Indonesian general insurance market's commission dynamics, and the logic of the Allianz Utama retrenchment strategy.

Envisioning the Well-Being of Indonesian General Insurance: Reflecting from The Retrenchment Strategy of Allianz Utama 2022
International Journal of Multidisciplinary: Applied Business and Education Research, Vol. 4 No. 8
Examines the structural conditions of the Indonesian general insurance market — chronic soft-market dynamics, acquisition cost compression, and commission warfare — through a case study of Allianz Utama Indonesia's 2022 retrenchment strategy. Argues that sustainable market health requires industry-wide recalibration of the acquisition cost model, and that individual company discipline can deliver turnaround even in unfavorable market conditions.
