Jyotisha (ज्योतिष, "science of light") is the traditional Indian system of astrology — one of the six Vedangas, the auxiliary disciplines attached to the Vedas. In the West it is usually called Vedic astrology or Hindu astrology. It has been practised continuously for at least 2,500 years and remains a living tradition in India, Nepal, and the diaspora.
The Sanskrit term Jyotisha covers three classical branches:
Jyotisha works with the same basic raw materials as Western astrology — planets, signs, houses, aspects — but frames them differently. The most distinctive features are:
A Vedic birth chart is called a Kundali (कुण्डली) or Janma Kundali (birth chart). It is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment and place of birth, projected onto a flat diagram of 12 divisions.
Both diagrams show the same information: which planets sit in which signs and which houses, where the Ascendant falls, and where Rahu and Ketu are placed.
The Rashi (राशि) is the zodiac sign — a 30° segment of the sidereal ecliptic. There are 12, each with its own ruling planet (rashi lord), element, and quality. In Jyotisha, the sign shows how a planet expresses itself — its style, temperament, and preferred mode of action.
| # | Rashi | English | Ruler | Element | Key Quality |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | मेष (Meṣa) | Aries | Mars | Fire | Initiative, courage, impulse |
| 2 | वृषभ (Vṛṣabha) | Taurus | Venus | Earth | Stability, beauty, materiality |
| 3 | मिथुन (Mithuna) | Gemini | Mercury | Air | Communication, duality, curiosity |
| 4 | कर्क (Karka) | Cancer | Moon | Water | Emotion, nurture, home |
| 5 | सिंह (Siṃha) | Leo | Sun | Fire | Authority, dignity, self |
| 6 | कन्या (Kanyā) | Virgo | Mercury | Earth | Analysis, service, detail |

| 11 | कुम्भ (Kumbha) | Aquarius | Saturn | Air | Community, innovation, gains |
| 12 | मीन (Mīna) | Pisces | Jupiter | Water | Dissolution, spirituality, compassion |
A Bhava (भाव) is a house — one of the 12 life departments of the chart. Houses are counted from the Lagna (Ascendant), so the 1st house is whichever sign rises at birth. The house shows where a planet's energy plays out.
| # | Bhava | Life Domain | Natural Karaka |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Tanu (तनु) | Body, self, personality, vitality | Sun |
| 2 | Dhana (धन) | Wealth, family, speech, values | Jupiter |
| 3 | Sahaja (सहज) | Siblings, courage, communication, short journeys | Mars |
| 4 | Sukha (सुख) | Mother, home, property, inner happiness | Moon |
| 5 | Putra (पुत्र) | Children, creativity, romance, past merit | Jupiter |

| 10 | Karma (कर्म) | Career, public status, authority | Saturn / Sun |
| 11 | Labha (लाभ) | Gains, friends, networks, fulfilment of desires | Jupiter |
| 12 | Moksha (मोक्ष) | Loss, foreign lands, liberation, spirituality | Saturn / Ketu |
A Graha (ग्रह) is a planet or planetary agent. Jyotisha uses nine grahas — the seven visible planets plus the two lunar nodes, Rahu and Ketu, which are treated as full planets despite being mathematical points. Each graha is a karmic agent with specific significations (karakatva).
| Graha | English | Key Significations |
|---|---|---|
| सूर्य (Sūrya) | Sun | Soul, father, authority, vitality, ego, government |
| चन्द्र (Chandra) | Moon | Mind, mother, emotions, public, nourishment, tides |
| मंगल (Maṅgala) | Mars | Energy, courage, aggression, siblings, property, surgery |
| बुध (Budha) | Mercury | Intellect, speech, commerce, learning, writing, analysis |
| गुरु (Guru) / बृहस्पति (Bṛhaspati) | Jupiter | Wisdom, expansion, fortune, children, dharma, guru |
| शुक्र (Śukra) | Venus | Love, beauty, marriage, luxury, arts, vehicles |
| शनि (Śani) | Saturn | Discipline, karma, delay, endurance, longevity, grief |
| राहु (Rāhu) | North Node | Obsession, foreign things, sudden events, materialism, unconventionality |
| केतु (Ketu) | South Node | Detachment, spirituality, past-life mastery, sudden loss, moksha |
Every graha has zodiac signs in which it is strong, weak, or neutral. This is the foundation of judging a planet's capacity to deliver its promises.
| Graha | Exaltation (Ucca) | Debilitation (Nīca) | Own Sign (Svakṣetra) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun | Aries 10° | Libra 10° | Leo |

| Mercury | Virgo 15° | Pisces 15° | Gemini, Virgo |
| Jupiter | Cancer 5° | Capricorn 5° | Sagittarius, Pisces |
| Venus | Pisces 27° | Virgo 27° | Taurus, Libra |
| Saturn | Libra 20° | Aries 20° | Capricorn, Aquarius |
| Rahu | Taurus / Gemini | Scorpio / Sagittarius | — |
| Ketu | Scorpio / Sagittarius | Taurus / Gemini | — |
Between exaltation and debilitation, the classical scheme ranks signs as Moolatrikona (the planet's "office" — second-strongest), Sva (own), Mitra (friend's sign), Sama (neutral), and Śatru (enemy's sign). Moolatrikona is a planet's favourite sign — strong but slightly less than exaltation.
The Nakshatra (नक्षत्र) is the single most distinctive feature of Jyotisha. The word literally means "that which does not decay" — referring to the fixed stars. In practice, a nakshatra is a lunar mansion: one of 27 equal divisions of the 360° zodiac, each spanning 13°20′ of arc.
Nakshatras add texture to the sign. Two people with the Moon in the same rashi may have very different minds if they are in different nakshatras. Nakshatras are used for:
Each spans 13°20′. Padas (quarters) are explained in the next section.

A Pada (पाद, literally "foot") is a quarter of a nakshatra. Since a nakshatra spans 13°20′, each pada spans exactly 3°20′. Every nakshatra has four padas, giving a total of 27 × 4 = 108 padas across the zodiac.
For example, if the Moon sits at 18° sidereal Gemini, it is in Ārdrā nakshatra (6°40′ – 20°00′ Gemini) — and its pada depends on which quarter of that 13°20′ it occupies:
| Pada | Span within Ārdrā | Absolute position | Navamsa sign |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pada 1 | 6°40′ – 10°00′ Gemini | 66°40′ – 70°00′ | Sagittarius |
| Pada 2 | 10°00′ – 13°20′ Gemini | 70°00′ – 73°20′ | Capricorn |
| Pada 3 | 13°20′ – 16°40′ Gemini | 73°20′ – 76°40′ | Aquarius |
| Pada 4 | 16°40′ – 20°00′ Gemini | 76°40′ – 80°00′ | Pisces |
So a Moon at 18° Gemini would be in Ārdrā pada 4 — which projects into Pisces navamsa. The pada gives you a third layer of psychological refinement: rashi (sign) → nakshatra → pada.
These are the working terms you'll see in any Jyotisha reading. Each defines a piece of how the chart is assembled and interpreted.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| लग्न (Lagna) | Ascendant — the rising degree at birth. Sets the entire house structure; the Lagna lord is the "king" of the chart. |
| राशि (Rāśi) | Zodiac sign (sidereal). Twelve 30° divisions of the ecliptic. |

Shadbala is the quantitative scoring system that measures how strong each planet really is. A planet may look well-placed by sign but score poorly overall. The system totals six independent sources of strength, each measured in virūpas (units).
| Strength | Measures |
|---|---|
| स्थानबल (Sthānabala) | Positional strength — sign dignity (exaltation, moolatrikona, own, friend, enemy) |
| दिक्बल (Dikbala) | Directional strength — specific house placement (Jupiter/Mercury 1st, Moon/Venus 4th, etc.) |
| कालबल (Kālabala) | Temporal strength — time of day/year, planetary hour, waxing/waning phase |
| चेष्टाबल (Cheṣṭābala) | Motional strength — retrograde adds power; speed relative to average |
| नैसर्गिक बल (Naisargika Bala) | Natural inherent strength — fixed order: Sun > Moon > Venus > Jupiter > Mercury > Mars > Saturn |
| दृक्बल (Dṛkbala) | Aspectual strength — aspects received from benefics or malefics |
Two planets in the same sign can have drastically different Shadbala. When a dasha lord is running, its Shadbala determines whether it delivers its promises fully, partially, or not at all.
Ashtakvarga ("eight-fold division") is a unique scoring system in which each of the seven planets and the Lagna contributes a set of dots (bindus) to each of the 12 signs, based on classical rules. The result is a numeric map of karmic support across the zodiac.
The Vimshottari Dasha is the default timing system. It assigns a fixed period to each of the nine grahas, in a specific repeating sequence, starting from the lord of the Moon's nakshatra at birth. The full cycle is 120 years — believed to match a maximum human lifespan.
| Planet | Years | Theme |
|---|---|---|
| केतु (Ketu) | 7 | Detachment, spirituality, past-life settlements, sudden losses |
| शुक्र (Śukra) | 20 | Relationships, pleasure, luxury, arts, material comfort |
| सूर्य (Sūrya) | 6 | Authority, recognition, leadership, father, ego |
| चन्द्र (Chandra) | 10 | Emotions, mother, home, public life, mind |
| मंगल (Maṅgala) | 7 | Energy, ambition, conflict, property, siblings |
| राहु (Rāhu) | 18 | Obsession, foreign environments, upheaval, worldly expansion |
| गुरु (Guru) | 16 | Wisdom, fortune, children, teaching, dharma |
| शनि (Śani) | 19 | Discipline, hard work, delay, endurance, life lessons |
| बुध (Budha) | 17 | Intellect, communication, writing, commerce |
The Yogini Dasha is a shorter nakshatra-based cycle of 36 years, particularly useful for material and health matters. Because the periods are small, it often pins down the annual window for events with great accuracy.
| Yogini | Years | Theme |
|---|---|---|
| मंगला (Maṅgalā) | 1 | Emotional beginnings, short-term gains |
| पिङ्गला (Piṅgalā) | 2 | Recognition, authority, ego challenges |
| धन्या (Dhanyā) | 3 | Prosperity, wisdom, expansion |
| भ्रमरी (Bhramarī) | 1 | Energy, conflict, quick decisions |
| भद्रिका (Bhadrikā) | 2 | Intellect, learning, communication |
| उल्का (Ulkā) | 2 | Pressure, discipline, hard lessons |
| सिद्धा (Siddhā) | 3 | Relationships, pleasure, artistic pursuits |
| सङ्कटा (Saṅkaṭā) | 4 | Crisis, sudden changes, breakthroughs |
The eight Yoginis repeat every 36 years. Used alongside Vimshottari to confirm precise annual timing for material events.
Chara Dasha is a rasi (sign)-based dasha, derived from the Jaimini Sutras. Unlike planet-based systems, it moves through the 12 signs in sequence, starting from a sign chosen by specific rules (the lagna, the sign with the most planets, or the Atmakaraka's sign).
Varshaphal ("fruit of the year") is the Vedic solar-return chart, cast for the exact moment each year the Sun returns to its natal sidereal longitude. It belongs to the Tajika branch of Jyotisha, which absorbed some Persian and Arabic techniques in the medieval period.
KP is a 20th-century refinement of Jyotisha created by Prof. K.S. Krishnamurti. It keeps the classical foundation but overlays a finer stellar division on top of the nakshatras. The key innovation: a planet delivers the results of its Star-lord (nakshatra lord), not its sign lord.
KP is popular for missing-person cases, medical queries, and career decisions — situations where the practitioner wants a clear yes/no rather than a broad narrative.
| Term | Meaning |
|---|---|
| नवांश (Navāṃśa / D9) | Ninth divisional chart — marriage, inner strength, dharma. |
| आत्मकारक (Ātmakāraka) | Planet with highest degree — soul's desire indicator (Jaimini). |
| अमात्यकारक (Amātyakāraka) | Planet with second-highest degree — career and advisor. |
| दारकारक (Dārakāraka) | Planet with lowest degree — indicates the spouse. |
| नीच (Nīca) | Debilitation — planet in its fall sign. Nīca Baṅga = cancellation of debilitation. |
| उच्च (Ucca) | Exaltation — planet at maximum strength. |
| मूलत्रिकोण (Mūlatrikoṇa) | The planet's "office" sign — very strong, just below exaltation. |
| साढेसती (Sāḍhe Satī) | 7.5-year transit of Saturn over the natal Moon sign and the signs either side. |
| गोचर (Gocara) | Transits — used with dasha for timing events. |
| वक्री (Vakrī) | Retrograde — gains cheṣṭā bala (motional strength); often delayed or unconventional results. |
| अस्त (Asta) | Combust — planet too close to the Sun; weakened. |
| युद्ध (Yuddha) | Planetary war — two planets within 1° in the same sign; they damage each other. |
Think of Jyotisha as a karmic weather system. The Kundali is a snapshot of cosmic karmic imprints at the moment of first breath. Sidereal longitude, nakshatras, padas, and dashas make it uniquely predictive.
Each subsystem answers a different question. Layered together, they form a complete reading.
