Dewasa — Good & Bad Days for Activities

Dewasa (also Dina) are classifications of days based on the combination of Pancawara and Saptawara. The total neptu (as in Javanese) determines the quality of the day.

Total NeptuClassificationMeaning
7, 16Dewa (Godly)Excellent for ceremonies, beginnings, travel.
8, 17Manusa (Human)Neutral – ordinary activities.
9, 18Setra (Graveyard)Inauspicious – avoid major events.
10Panca SudaMixed – can be good with precautions.
11Naga (Dragon)Dangerous – avoid travel, business.
12Kala (Time)Bad for new beginnings, ok for routine.
13Kala RauhVery bad – avoid all important activities.
14Kala SungsangInauspicious – especially for construction.
15Kala NiskalaSpiritually charged – good for meditation, dangerous for worldly matters.
NoteThe total neptu is calculated as (Pancawara value + Saptawara value) modulo 9? Actually simpler: values differ. In Bali, the system uses a different weighting. The table above is a simplified common reference.

Pengalantaka — Day of Obstruction

Pengalantaka (also spelled Pengalantakan) is a day when it is forbidden to undertake any important activity, especially moving house, starting a business, or marriage. It is determined by the position of the moon or certain wuku combinations. Common Pengalantaka days include:

On these days, it is believed that any attempt will be met with obstacles or even disaster. Instead, one performs prayascita (purification) rituals.

Alah — Divination by Day Combination

Alah is the system of determining the outcome of an action (e.g., travel, trading, marriage) based on the combination of the 5-day (Pancawara) and 7-day (Saptawara) cycles. Each combination has a name and a divinatory meaning.

PancawaraSaptawaraAlah NameMeaning
UmanisRedite (Sun)Alah MedangGood for agriculture.
UmanisSoma (Mon)Alah PucanganGood for making offerings.
UmanisAnggara (Tue)Alah DukutAvoid war, conflict.
... etc. (full table would have 35 entries)In practice, Balinese priests use a reference book (Wariga) to look up the alah for any given day.
NoteA complete alah table has 5×7 = 35 entries. This guide provides an overview; actual divination requires a specialist.

How Wariga Works · 101

Identify the Day
Note the Saptawara (week day), Pancawara (market day), and other wara (Triwara, Caturwara, etc.).
Consult the Wuku
Find the current wuku (30-week cycle) to understand the underlying energetic theme.
Check Dewasa / Alah
Based on neptu or combination, determine whether the day is auspicious (dewa, manusa) or inauspicious (kala, naga).
Avoid Pengalantaka
If it is a Pengalantaka day, postpone all major activities and perform purification.
SummaryWariga is the Balinese art of reading the sacred calendar to determine the proper time for rituals, ceremonies, and daily life decisions. It integrates multiple concurrent cycles.
